The AMEP provides 510 hours of language tuition to eligible migrants. Refugee and humanitarian entrants under the age of 25 with low levels of schooling are eligible for up to 910 hours of English language tuition while those over 25 are eligible for up to 610 hours of tuition.
To be eligible to learn English through the AMEP, migrants or humanitarian entrants need to:
- have arrived in Australia after July 1, 1991, or
- be temporary residents who hold certain visa classes, or
- have been granted permanent residence in Australia since July 1, 1991
- be 18 years or over
- register with the AMEP programme (ideally within three months of arriving in Australia)
- be interviewed when they register to see if they have functional English
