Students from Central TAFE’s Art Portfolio participated in an Art in Bloom event held at the Art Gallery of Western Australia.
The biennial event, organised by the Friends of the Art Gallery, is the only of its kind in Australia.
Over 100 Western Australians were given an artwork from the State Art Collection and invited to create a three dimensional floral response using cut flowers and live plants.
Students from the Advanced Diploma of Jewellery and Object Design worked with their lecturer, Vicki Ames, and participated in the design and installation of the foyer and main concourse display.
The event included creating a set design for a circus troupe to perform on opening night, with a 50 metre swing suspended from the ceiling, as well as a static display for the three day exhibition.
The Central TAFE students soaked up the opportunity to interact with a range of industry and professional people who worked on the event.
This is a great example of the creative industries area linking with the Perth cultural hub and contributing to the city’s artistic activity.
At the same time, a City in Bloom project was run by the City of Perth. Central TAFE’s Certificate IV Visual Art and Contemporary Craft students and lecturer, Olga Cironis, receive a $500 grant to make an artwork with 'The Caller' statue in the Art Gallery forecourt.
The artwork was a series of wrapped boxes that unexpectedly 'travelled' all over the city when members of the public (unprompted) took them from the statue and left them in a number of locations! This was documented on CCTV security footage taken by city cameras.
