Building Design and Technology student Adrian Tatasciore has landed the big one by winning the student category of a national design competition.
Adrian, who works for Anthony J Casella Designers, beat entries from around Australia in the prestigious National Building Designers Association Design Awards.
His fish like café design was inspired by the outdoor recreation life enjoyed in Western Australia.
Adrian, who has had a life long passion for building design, says winning this award makes him proud of what he has accomplished so early in his career and hopes it will further establish him in the building design industry.
“I’ve enjoyed building design ever since I was young – its always excited me and its something I’ve always felt I had a flair for,” he said.
“Apart from fulfilling a childhood dream, winning this award has been incredibly meaningful as it is recognition from industry and has generated a lot of interest from other designers.”
“The award will also help considerably towards my goal of opening my own design business,” he said.
“My design was for a café situated in Herdsman Lake, and is designed to look like a giant fish,” he explains.

“When viewed from the front it appears as if the fish is being pulled out of the water by a giant stainless steel hook and I’ve used high tensile steel tension cable attached to a prefabricated steel fish hook to resemble a fishing rod.
“Looking down on the building from above is when the form really takes shape.
"The café’s most dominant feature is the white concrete roof shaped like a fish.
"From overhead the fish hook caught on the mouth, combined with a large round skylight to form the eye completes the impression of a fish.”
Central TAFE’s executive director of Engineering, Technology and Business, Jamie Mackaway, congratulated Adrian on his win saying that it is evidence that Central TAFE are providing the skills sought after by industry.
“To achieve this type of industry recognition at a national level is a commendable achievement and Adrian is to be congratulated on the creativity and vision that has set him apart from his peers in an intensely competitive industry,” he said.
Central TAFE’s Building Design and Technology courses provide industry relevant skills and knowledge to develop, present and document a range of design solutions for residential, industrial and commercial buildings.
Students learn design, site surveys, construction technology, building materials and 2D and 3D computer aided design. Students also undertake a supervised work placement where they apply the skills and knowledge they have learned.
Students and graduates are held in high regard by industry and enjoy success at both a State and National level in the workplace and in industry competitions.
